Total catch estimate by use of load cells (KB-36-002-062)

Project: LNV project

Project Details

As part of the Dutch data collection programme, the Dutch demersal fleet collects discard data through a self-sampling program using a reference fleet of 20-25 vessels. Skippers record operational data including total catch and landings, while discard samples are weighed and sorted in labs to estimate total discard composition. Skippers estimate total catch per haul, but this can be imprecise. Alternative techniques like static Sea State Compensated (SSC) load cells have been tested for more accurate measurements. Though proven reliable, these load cells are not easily transferable to other vessels. Based on experience with Norway lobster vessels, installing SSC load cells on reference fleet vessels could enhance the discard self-sampling program and improve the quality of the catch estimations.
