Description

Purpose

The market survey has been set up in cooperation with the network sand free leek. Central research examined:

  1. Why choose ordinary consumers sand-free leek?
  2. What are the benefits of soil free leek which consumers prefer?

Research method

Exploratory qualitative consumer research in supermarkets where sand free leeks are sold alongside conventional grown leeks.

Results

In response to the consumer research, the following should be noted:

  1. Consumers prefer sand free grown leeks especially because of the thinner stem. Moreover, the washing of the product before cooking is easier and it looks better than traditional grown leeks.
  2. Consumers prefer traditional grown leeks mainly because of its lower price and sales per piece. Moreover, it is often customary to choose this leeks.
  3. Out of the presented advantages of the sand-free cultivation, consumers appeal to ‘none or fewer pesticides' and 'wash takes less effort’. However own convenience and health are most important to consumers, followed by benefits for growers and water use.
  4. About half of the respondents eat leeks 1 to 2 times per week
  5. Slightly more than half of the respondents do not eat all parts of the leek; 'green parts', 'leaves and tips' are often qualified as not tasty, tough or dirty.
