Spatial Analysis of the Impacts of Land Use Intensification on Soil Erosion Under Targeted Management Practices in Nsonge Catchment, Mt. Rwenzori, Uganda

Project: PhD

Project Details

Description

Land degradation is often driven by land-use intensification due to increased demand for food and settlements. In the Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda, damage to forests and soils and footpath development has intensified soil erosion and lowered land productivity. This study examines how land use changes and footpaths developed concurrently and how they affect soil erosion. The effectiveness of erosion control measures adopted by farmers through the PIP approach of the CommonGrounds project will be measured at selected plots through UAV remote sensing and field measurements. Integration of physical and agent-based modelling will be used to assess the impact of upscaling erosion control measures to the watershed level to guide farmers and policymakers on effective landscape restoration for community resilience.
