Ozone is a greenhouse gas and is toxic to humans and plants. Ozone deposition takes place by leaf uptake through plant stomata, which damages leaf cells and inhibits photosynthesis. This potentially leads to decreased productivity of natural vegetation and crops and thereby to increased concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Current methods (field experiments and global models) do not resolve ozone deposition at the ecosystem scale. We will explicitly resolve stomatal ozone deposition at high spatial resolution in an atmospheric chemistry transport model. Combining this with remote sensing observations, we study ozone deposition impacts on ecosystem carbon uptake.
