Project Details

Description

The Government’s Vision for Nature 2014 notices that changes in climate and society cause a growing awareness that conservation efforts must be directed more towards proper environmental conditons instead of particular species and habitats. Opportunities for internationally characteristic species require more emphasis on natural processes as well. This should result in more emphasis on natural dynamics within the framework of the Habitats and Birds Directive and wherever possible in regional projects. At the same time a resilient nature with room for natural processes is required outside Natura 2000-sites as well which relies heavily on the contribution of local residents and businesses in the immediate surroundings. These two requirements are subject of current BO-research projects (BO-11-019.01-008 and 009).

In the first half of 2016 the Netherlands will hold the Presidency of the European Union. One of the objectives is to present good examples demonstrating that a more flexible interpretation of de Birds- and Habitats Directive results in high-quality nature. The project provides all the material needed to make such a brochure for an international audience.
