Project Details

Description

Currently pets are not screened for carbapenemase producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPEs) in the Netherlands. In the Dutch human population CPEs have repeatedly been demonstrated. In households with companion animals in genera intensive contact with the animals exists. Therefore, pet animals could play a role in the spread of CPEs. The CPEs to date described in literature usually also contain ESBLs. At the veterinary Microbiology Diagnostic Centre (VMDC), part of the Faculty of veterinary medicine, since 2009 all ESBL-suspected bacterial isolates on the basis of antibiotic sensitivity testing are stored. These isolates are isolated from clinical samples, submitted for diagnostics by veterinary clinics spread all over Netherlands. This concerns primarily samples of dogs and cats. All available isolates (currently about 350) will be screened for the presence of CPE.

If CPE is detected, the genes, plamids and isolates will be characterized in detail.
