Proactive Management of Antarctic Tourism: Exploring the Role of ATS Principles and Values and Best Practices Beyond the ATS

Antarctic tourism has grown substantially – both in terms of visitor numbers and types of activities – and further growth is expected. Many of the 29 nations that collectively manage Antarctica are concerned that the 1991 Environmental Protocol and other regulations do not adequately protect the environment, safety and science. This project aims to generate knowledge for a proactive management of tourism within the Antarctic Treaty System and focuses on four themes: (1) growth of tourism (2) diversification of activities; (3) jurisdiction (who regulates which activities?) (4) role of states that are/are not involved in tourism (''use'' /''non-use states'').

Antarctisch toerisme is sterk gegroeid – zowel in bezoekersaantallen als typen activiteiten – en verdere groei wordt verwacht. Veel van de 29 landen die samen Antarctica beheren zijn bezorgd dat het Milieuprotocol van 1991 en andere regulering onvoldoende bescherming bieden aan milieu, veiligheid en wetenschap. Dit project beoogt kennis te genereren voor een proactief beheer van toerisme binnen het Antarctisch Verdrag Systeem en is gericht op vier thema’s: (1) groei van bezoekersaantallen (2) diversificatie van activiteiten; (3) jurisdictie (wie regelt welke activiteiten?) (4) rol van staten die wel of juist niet zelf bij toerisme betrokken zijn (''use'' en ''non-use'').
