PRIMA – Proteins & Peptides: how breast milk proteins & peptides prevent airway infections

Breastfeeding is important for the healthy development of newborns, including its protective role in respiratory tract infections. Using novel -omics technologies, we will profile immune-related milk components, determine the link between these components and the occurrence of respiratory tract infections in infants, and mechanistically characterize these components in vitro. Preventing infant respiratory tract infections through breast milk components will lead to benefits on the infant and parent level, as well as on a societal level. The knowledge from this project will be beneficial for, among others, human milks banks and food industry.

Borstvoeding is belangrijk voor de gezonde ontwikkeling van de pasgeboren baby, waaronder bescherming tegen luchtweginfecties. Met behulp van nieuwe -omics technologiën willen we immuun-gerelateerde melkcomponenten analyseren, de relatie tussen deze componenten and het voorkomen van luchtweginfecties in babies bepalen, en de werkingsmechanismes van deze componenten in vitro bestuderen. Het voorkomen van luchtweginfecties door componenten in borstvoeding zal leiden tot voordelen voor zowel babies als hun ouders, maar ook voor de samenleving als geheel. De kennis verkregen uit dit project kan daarnaast gebruikt worden door bv. moedermelkbanken en voedingsindustrie.,
