Description

A sound management of chemicals is essential to implement many, if not all, UN Sustainable Development Goals. The UN (Global Environmental Outlook) and the EU (Green Deal, Towards a sustainable chemicals policy strategy of the Union), among others, call for measures to secure a non-toxic environment. The total number of industrial chemicals in commerce globally was conservatively estimated at 40.000 to 60.000. More than 60% of the volume of chemicals in the EU are classified as hazardous to human health, while around 35% are hazardous to the environment. Our knowledge about exposure to and toxicology of chemicals is relatively limited. Moreover, the methods to obtain data and data storage are not well harmonised which complicates data exchange.

PARC is an EU-wide research and innovation platform that aims to support chemical risk assessment in the EU and member states with new data, knowledge, methods, expertise and networks. The intention is that PARC will start in the second trimester of 2022. The current project enables to prepare contributions from Wageningen Research and to start the execution of the EU project. The Biometris group of WR will further develop the MCRA data and model platform, improve modelling of exposure to and hazard of chemical, and contribute to model integration. Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR) will develop methods for human biomonitoring including non-target/suspect screening approaches, design animal-free methods to identify, detect and provide early warnings on chemical hazards in the food chain.
