Project: EZproject

Project Details

Description

The NWO-programme Urbanising Deltas of the World (UDW) aims to increase knowledge about river deltas worldwide and to contribute to water safety, food security, and to sustainable economic development in these areas (http://www.nwo.nl/en/research-and-results/programmes/Urbanising+Deltas+of+the+World).

Within UDW-call a research project was granted titled “Integrated and Sustainable Port Development in Ghana within an African Context”. The activities associated with traditional port development negatively affects ecosystems and socio-economic functions. Recent initiatives such the Sustainable Ports Guidance of PIANC and IAPH suggest adopting new approaches for sustainable port development. This project, therefore, aims to develop an inclusive and participatory framework and tools for the design of integrated and sustainable ports in Africa, by focusing on the Ghanaian port of Tema as a pilot project. WUR is partner in this project and brings in  expertise on coastal ecosystems and Building with Nature.
