Microplastics in the terrestrial system and their effects on soil macroinvertebrate network structures and soil ecosystem services

    Project: NWO project

    Project Details

    Description

The effect of microplastics on the terrestrial system is still not well-known. This research examined how macroinvertebrate networks are built in soils polluted with microplastics. The focus was on how microplastics are transported and accumulated in the bodies of macroinvertebrates and what the implications are for the environment. With microplastics, earthworm gut microbiome diversity changes, beetles abundance decreases. How high is the number of microplastics in the soil, how low is the abundance of macroinvertebrates. Accumulation of microplastics in invertebrates was verified, polyethylene and polypropylene are found in earthworms. Data are still being generated and more results will be obtained.
