Project Details
Description
The public-private partnership FROSTEQ seeks to move beyond the –18 °C standard by exploring safe temperature tolerances and fluctuations, reducing energy demand and carbon emissions without compromising safety or quality. Specific knowledge gaps need to be addressed to enable this, including understanding the temperature tolerances within the frozen food supply chains and strategically optimize these tolerances to lower and time-shift energy usage while safeguarding safety and quality of frozen food. Additionally, better understanding is needed of the supply chain actors and consumer attitudes towards an increase in frozen food temperatures.
FROSTEQ provides results across a wide range of frozen food products by scientifically quantifying the impact of higher temperatures on safety and quality. These evidence-based outcomes will support recommendations for optimizing temperature standards in the frozen supply chain and may contribute to dossiers supporting future changes in legal regulation and private sector agreements.
FROSTEQ will deliver insights into consumer acceptance of higher temperature standards. And finally, FROSTEQ will contribute to further reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint of the frozen food industry and indicate where the most impact can be created in the supply chain.
The FROSTEQ consortium brings together a well-balanced representation of the key actors in the frozen food value chain, ensuring strong national, European, and global reach for the project’s outcomes. FROSTEQ engages various stakeholders as partner, including the frozen food industry (Nomad, Deutsches Tiefkühlinstitut e.V. (dti), [RT1] the umbrella organization of the German frozen food industry, and some member companies), transport and storage companies (Maersk), domestic home appliances (BSH) and sector organizations (Nekovri, Global Cold Chain Alliance, GCCA, Move to Minus 15) and world leading research organization (WFBR). This collaboration ensures that the knowledge generated from FROSTEQ reaches relevant stakeholders, fostering informed decision-making and further promoting energy efficiency in the frozen food industry. In addition, the results can be used to discuss a possible adaptation of the current EU directives and the Codex Alimentarius at EU and UN level.
