Project Details
Description
The proposed research will focus on the development and implementation of the total use principle (vierkantsverwaarding) of bivalves to utilize all their components as effectively and highly valued as possible, including the use of side-products. The project focusses on developing bioactive health promoting extracts, (functional) protein for food and feed and the use of non-edible fractions. This approach will provide novel revenue models which expand the demand for bivalves as a high quality bio-based raw material. Coincidingly, these novel revenue models also provide ecosystem services like the fixation of nutrients and CO2, which benefits society, the connection of land and sea, and the complete system overall
