Description
Currently, all kinds of developments are taking place in the area of Big Data in food (in the livestock and farming), and also in food consumption in relation to health. Big Data refers to the four V’s: volume, velocity, variety and veracity. Given these developments and applications Big Data has probably also a lot of potential in land and nature management. At present it is not clear what Big Data can mean for the management of the rural area and natural environment in the Netherlands. LEI wants to know more about the possibilities of combining all kinds of geo-referenced data (location-specific data) coming from different sources (own sources, governmental sources, other public sources and private sources) and acquiring new insights. There are hardly any examples or applications known. The project considers what georeferenced (location-specific data) relating to rural area in the Netherlands currently and probably in the future (long-term) is available. It also examines what societal needs (e.g. the government) can be met by combining all the different geo-referenced data from the same place (a specific rural location or area in the Netherlands). And it also focuses on possible interpretation and meaning of those combined data. Does it serve as a signaling function? Does it contributes to triangulation so that the reliability of knowledge and research will increase? Or does it contributes to the cost effectiveness of research? The result is an essay in which the need for and the potential of big data for location-specific research LEI will be reflected. And it will indicate the direction for the strategy and role of the LEI regarding Big Data (data science) in the rural area.
