Description

The CARE project develops new knowledge on the effects of climate change and on climate adaptation measures. The project focus is local community planning in rural areas. The project develops integrated regional adaptation strategies, in cooperation with stakeholders, putting emphasis on the sectors water management, agriculture and nature. In the CARE project several simulation models have been developed for both the physical system and the social economic system to better understand the impacts of climate change on the functioning of the physical system, institutions and individual farmers.

The model METAPOP simulates the impact of increased weather extremes and the shifting of suitable climate zones on the survival of species in ecological networks. The model predicts the climate robustness of ecological networks, analysing landscape scenarios that differ in the amount of Green Infrastructure and nature areas.

The Agent Based Model RULEX models land transactions between farmers and nature organizations for different climate change and socio economic scenario’s. The resulting patterns of nature areas and green infrastructure are analysed with the METAPOP model to predict the impacts on the climate robustness of the ecological network. In addition the effectiveness of policy options  are being analysed, for instance the willingness of farmers to participate in Green Infrastructure.

Within the CARE project a synthesis is carried out of effective combinations of adaptation measures to climate proof the rural area. The opportunities for integration, synergy and the contribution to the regional adaptive capacity are being analysed.
