Description

De Hoeve Innovatie (DHI) has been working for a number of years on systems to tackle the emissions from its pig houses at the source. This not only reduces emissions from the barn, but also greatly improves the air quality inside the barn. This is achieved through a combination of measures. The manure is removed daily to a bio-digester for all categories of pigs. By removing the fresh manure from the barn daily, there is very little emission of methane from that manure. Measurements to date show emission reductions for methane of 67 to 93%. Through further optimization it is expected that the methane emission from the manure can be reduced to almost zero, leaving only the enteric emission of the animals. In addition to methane, ammonia and odor emissions are also reduced. The objective is to achieve a reduction of 70 to 80% for ammonia and of approximately 50% for odour. This integral emission reduction is important to get these systems implemented in practice.
