How thrilled are elasmobranchs about electromagnetic fields in offshore wind farms?

    Project: NWO project

    Project Details

    Description

Rays and sharks (RS) are important apex predators that use electromagnetic fields (EMF) to locate prey and orient themselves. There are clear indications that the EMF around power cables of offshore structures influence the behavior of RS. Although offshore wind farms offer opportunities for RS refuge in the absence of bottom trawling fisheries, EMF around the power cables could negate this. This project aims to investigate the effects of EMF on RS using non-invasive techniques and how effects can be mitigated if need be. Project is conducted by Wageningen University/Marine Research, Naturalis, TenneT, Witteveen+Bos, WoZep and the North Sea Foundation.
