The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature management and Food quality commissioned a large research programme on Green crop protection and pollinators. This research will last five years. The project Green Crop protection is carried out by Wageningen University & Research. The parallel sister project on pollinators is carried out by Wageningen University & Research, Naturalis and the EIS foundation to enhance natural populations of bees and other pollinating insects.
The project Green Crop Protection aims to develop prototypes of new cropping systems for arable crops, lily, apple and strawberry. These new cropping systems will be markedly less dependent on chemical crop protection, however farmers using these systems should be able to keep their market position nationally and internationally within a time horizon until 2030.
If use of a chemical crop protection appears to be essential to allow integrated control of pathogens, pest or weeds, or to develop a successful resistance management, only plant protection products will be diploid that are characterized by a so-called low-risk profile (referring to EU terminology and classification).
