The main project goal is the definition, specification, benchmarking, prototyping and validation of three remote sensing-enabled Essential Biodiversity Variables (RS-EBVs), namely Land Surface Phenology, Canopy Chlorophyll Concentration and Fragmentation, and their associated prototype processing chains as well as their application in scaling up and use-case demonstrations. The three selected RS-EBVs contribute to the assessment and monitoring of both the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems, as well as to biochemical vegetation traits.
Wageningen Environmental Research will be responsible for the RS-EBV fragmentation. For continental scale retrieval of fragmentation products, SPOT Vegetation, Envisat MERIS, MODIS, PROBA-V are candidates. For the protected areas and at local scale Sentinel-2 A/B MSI and Landsat 4-7 (E)TM and 8 OLI would be suitable for retrieval of fragmentation RS-EBV products.
