Description
In 2013 the report on food and feed safety assessment aspects of new plant varieties has been finalised. This report reflects a literature study on the different aspects of conventional and new breeding techniques, as well breeding techniques that fall under the current European regulatory definition of GMOs. In addition an overview is provided of current approaches of the safety assessment of new plant varieties in other parts of the world, including the USA and Canada. Based on these overviews and current insights into risk assessment procedures for conventional varieties on the one hand and GMOs on the other hand alternative risk assessment strategies for new plant varieties have been formulated with relation to food, feed and environmental safety.
