Project Details
Description
Methods and conditions required to be recorded killing of animals in EU legislation (EU regulation 1099/2009) and national legislation (Decree holders of animals). For turkeys (and other poultry with live weight of> 5 kg) are different methods as applied to the primary company indicated. Euthanasia can be carried out by means of CO2, N2 or a mixture of both of them, by the use of a non-penetrative captive bolt or by means of electrocution. In order to arrive at a method for killing of turkeys and other poultry heavier than 5kg by means of electrocution, it is necessary that the required current for induction of cardiac arrest and death in different weight classes and the applicability is defined under practical conditions.
The objective of the project is to develop a science-based advice on electrocution of turkey heavier than 5kg on the primary company in the context of culling animals. It will be tested whether proposed currents for head only application lead to irreversible anesthesia which turns into death.
