Project Details
Description
Nature Inclusive Design (NID) solutions for offshore wind have emerged in recent years in the Netherlands. NIDs are expected to be instrumental for nature restoration purposes. NID options for offshore windfarms include optimised scour protection around turbines, which offer habitat for umbrella species such as cod or flat oysters. The last two tenders for OWF (HKW and IJVER) even required NIDs. The NID4OCEAN project takes NIDs a few steps further from the Dutch into an EU context. The overall goal of the project (2024-2027) is to advance the emerging field of NiDs (and Nature Based Solutions in general) for offshore renewables, and provide effective, context-dependent solutions to industry, managers, and policy makers. This should help to achieve global and EU targets for carbon neutrality, biodiversity restoration and sustainable blue economy. The NiD4OCEAN consortium involves scientists, industry, SMEs, NGOs, and the standardization community (ISO). The project will provide overviews of NID solutions, biodiversity indicators, monitoring and assessment tools and recommendations.
