Tools for analysing regional bioeconomy

Several tools with a range of functions are available already. These will be reviewed, evaluated and described in short with a focus on regional stakeholders like policy makers and industry. The results will be made available to the public through a report and allow stakeholders to easily screen which tools are in particular interesting for their situation.

 

Catalogue of bioeconomy solutions and good practice examples

A catalogue of existing bio-based solutions (technologies) towards resource-efficient biorefineries for production of bioenergy, biomaterials, biochemicals and food & feed with a tested potential for market uptake (TRL ⊃3; 6) will be developed. The info will be stored in a publicly accessible database which is searchable via categories like feedstock, conversion technology and product, but also via key words. The database structure allows to easily go from one solution to an ‘adjacent’ solution. The content topics for each solution to be addressed will be determined in close cooperation with 10 partners from different regions spread over Europe.

Also, best practice examples for smaller scale solutions in rural areas will be identified and described in more detail.

 

Bioeconomy business models and funding instruments

Business models for the best practice solutions will be characterised and described according to the so-called Business Model Canvas format. Next to that, regional public policies and regulations of the past years with strong influence on regional stakeholders will be reviewed for replicability in other regions. Also, a general theoretical concept of policy integration across different political levels (from EU to regions) and across different policy domains (environmental, sustainable development, energy, bioeconomy) will be looked at. On top of this, regulatory barriers derived from EU regulations to the development of the bioeconomy will be identified and recommendations to overcome these proposed.
