Project: LVVN project

Project Details

Description

In the MIIP (Maritieme Innovatie Impuls Project) ‘Protecting with Nature’ in 2014 an inventory was made of  environmental friendly and stimulating methods to improve the durability of harbour and offshore infrastructures. Within this, indications were found that the type of bio-fouling might be indicative for the status of the underlying steel structure. A better understanding of this relation allows selective inspection of those parts of the steel structure where the highest corrosion rates can be expected. This would lead to substantial reduction of the inspection costs and effort.

In order to further develop this concept, and to collect proof of principle that can convince stakeholders to invest in the further development into a practical tool for infrastructure inspection, a new MIIP proposal (BioMain) has been submitted. BioMain is a cooperation between IMARES and TNO, and maritime maintenance companies and harbours that will invest in kind (facilitation and information exchange). The KB-budget is necessary for co-funding of the work that will be performed by IMARES.
