Description
DIFFUGAT (Diploid Inbreds For Fixation, and Unreduced GAmetes for Tetraploidy – A novel Fixation-Restitution Breeding method for potato) aimed to develop an innovative potato breeding scheme. Self-compatibility (Sli-locus), Diploid pollen and desynapsis were studied.
Potato breeding is complicated because of tetraploidy and outbreeding. While F1-hybrid breeding was proposed, this alternative uses of similar components, yet avoiding inbreeding depression. For society the speed of developing robust potato varieties with high resistance to pests and pathogens has increased, to lower use of pesticides, reduction of emissions during pesticide sprays and a more healthy environment.
