Designing Sustainable Environmental Infrastructures for Urban and Marine Resilience in the Dutch Caribbean Islands: Integrating Ethno-Architectural Engineering and Ecological Planning Approaches

Project: PhD

Project Details

Description

The delicate balance of ecosystems in the Dutch Caribbean, particularly the coral reefs and marine protected areas (MPAs), faces a significant threat due to inadequate Urban Residual Water Management practices. To address this pressing issue, a collaborative PhD research project between Wageningen University and the University of Curacao holds paramount importance. This research will focus on exploring the intricate relationship between urban planning, wastewater and stormwater (urban water) management, co-creation, design, governance, and their consequences for the ecological health of coral reefs and MPAs in the Dutch Caribbean. By undertaking this research, the aim is to develop effective strategies, solutions, governance frameworks, and design tools through co-creation processes to mitigate the negative impacts and ensure the long-term sustainability and resilience of these invaluable marine ecosystems.
