Project Details
Description
This research project delves into the complex challenges that climate change presents to leaders in (financial) institutions. It recognizes the uncertainty and non-linear nature of climate-related risks, which historical data fails to predict accurately. These leaders are expected to play a pivotal role in financing climate transformation while navigating scrutiny from various stakeholders. However, existing evidence suggests that they struggle to address climate challenges due to factors like short-term priorities, shareholder preferences, complexity, and knowledge gaps.
The project is organized into several phases:
Exploratory Phase:
- Conducted extensive literature reviews on micro, meso and macro levels levels to understand the drivers of inertia and inaction in climate change efforts.
Research Phase (Institutional and Systemic Levels):
- Interpreted results from the exploratory phase.
- Conducted a systematic literature review and formulated theoretical propositions and research questions.
- Administered questionnaires to management boards of financial institutions.
- Analyzed and interpreted the results to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and influences at the institutional and systemic levels.
Research Phase (Individual Level):
- Conducted interviews with board members to gather their perspectives on accelerating the climate transition.
- Interviewed relevant stakeholders to understand their perceptions of what is needed to expedite the climate transition.
Analysis, Interpretation, and Dissertation:
- Combined findings from all studies into a comprehensive research study.
- The aim of this research is to shed light on the intricate challenges faced by financial leaders in addressing climate change and to identify strategies for bridging the gap between climate objectives and tangible actions within financial institutions.
Ultimately, this project seeks to provide valuable insights and evidence-based intervention techniques for internal and external stakeholders working to promote climate-conscious actions within (financial) institutions.
