Project Details

Description

One of the Dutch obligations under ASCOBANS is to set up a harbor porpoise conservation plan. Since 2011, the knowledge gaps in the plan have been filled by conducting research into harbor porpoises. One of the plan's recommendations concerns the establishment of an independent scientific advisory committee for the harbor porpoise conservation plan. State Secretary Bleeker promised this to the House of Representatives in 2012, and this promise was subsequently repeated by State Secretary Dijksma. The purpose of the committee is to provide scientific advice on current and future harbor porpoise research. The first recommendation of the committee was published in 2016. In 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality published a revised harbor porpoise protection plan. Work will be continued in 2022.
