Project: EZproject

Project Details

Under the EU LULUCF decision, Member states have to develop a methodology for the reporting of greenhouse gas emissions from cropland and grazing land management. Reduction of emissions from organic soils can potentially generate credits in the order of 1 Mton CO2-eq per year. In the current reporting methodology a single emission factor is used, which is independent of the management of the peat soils. Therefore a more refined methodology is required in order to include the mitigation effect of peat land management in the national emission inventory. The objective of this project is to explore the possibilities to refine the methodology in order to capture the effect of mitigation efforts on peat soils in the national emission figures. This project consists of three activities: 1. Identification of options based on the recent PBL report on organic soils, 2. Literature review on the effect of emission reduction measures in peat soils and 3. Recommendations and reporting. Possible implementation of the proposed improved methodology could be done in 2018 with would additional budget.
