Description

In December 2016 a report was published about protected and threatened spiecies of animals and plants in cities (Wageningen Environmental Reseach, report no. 2776, in Dutch). This study consisted of a geographical analyis of the presence of selected Bird Directive, Habitat Directive and Red List species in urban areas. The study was a follow-uo of an earlier study on the importance of urban areas for the Dutch biodiversity on the basis of an extensive consultation of experts (published in Landschap 2014(4):194-203; in Dutch with an English summary). Both studies present a list of Bird Directive, Habitat Directive and Red List species that are strongly dependent on urban areas.

The project in 2017 aims to provide a more in depth interpretation of the findings of the former studies on the gbasis of (1) expertise of the project team, (2) key publications in the field and (3) a short case study. The interpretation will focus on the policy, legal, economic and societal aspects.
