Description

The Netherlands has signed the treaty that aims to protect and manage small cetaceans in the North Sea and Baltic Sea: Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans of the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASCOBANS). This Agreement came into force in 1994. The Netherlands is a member of ASCOBANS in order for the government to collaborate regionally and influence international policy and management of small cetaceans. The Netherlands is represented in ASCOBANS by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.

The instruments for the Netherlands to influence international policy are participation in the Advisory Committee (AC), where scientific advice on all cetacean species is drawn up, as well as input from the Netherlands in the working groups (like the North Sea Group (NSG)) and the Meeting of the Parties (MoP).
