Anaerobic microbiology of Black Sea

Project: PhD

Project Details

Description

The Black Sea is the largest euxinic basin in the world. Due to the lack of oxygen, other metabolisms such as sulphate reduction and methanogenesis occur. The importance of methylated substances for anaerobic microbial communities and metabolic fluxes might have been overlooked. In this project, the role of methanol, methylated sulfides and methylated amines will be studied, with a focus on the potential competitive or cooperative interactions between sulphate reducers and methanogens.
