Description
The production of high-quality materials such as dyes or food supplements from algae offers opportunities for Dutch horticulture entrepreneurs. Horticultural entrepreneurs have a lot of experience to optimally control crop production and to control the quality of the end product by controlling the growing conditions light, temperature, CO2 dosing, water- and nutrient supply for their current crops. They have experience in food production, in meeting the quality requirements of end-users and in organizing logistics and marketing of end products. It is obvious to use this experience for the cultivation of algae and thus to provide new sustainable high-quality products and to contribute to the bio-based economy. In the current project experimental research is carried out into the influence of various growing conditions for algae production in tubular photobioreactors placed in greenhouses in a new test facility in Bleiswijk. In addition, economic figures on investment and operating costs are collected, an economic calculation model has been developed to estimate a realistic prospect of algae cultivation in greenhouses. This leads to new strategic insight in suitable production systems of high-quality algae cultivation in greenhouses on a large scale in the future.
