AF14260 the development of a pentose-based biorefinery
DLO-FBR (Food and Biobased Research) will together with Avantium and Tereos Syral Belgium
perform precompetitive research into the development of a pentose-based biorefinery system.
The aim is to demonstrate at lab and semi pilot scale that pentoses like xylose and/or
arabinose can be refined from agricultural side streams like wheat bran, corn stover, sugar
beet pulp or bagasse. Such side streams from the agrifood industry are not suitable for human
consumption and only have a very low value as feed. Refining xylose from such streams offers
the agrifood industry huge opportunities to increase the overall value of their products. Xylose
or arabinose can be converted in a number of intermediates and products that can be used in
the non-food sector. Such products include products that are based upon xylose derived furfural.
This can be intermediates for e.g. resins but furfural can also be used for the production of
second generation furandicarboxylic acid. The production of second generation furandicarboxylic
acid is of huge importance to Avantium, who is the frontrunner in developing furandicarboxylic
acid based products such as PEF.
