Several technologies will be developed and combined to optimize the processes. BIOCON-CO2 will develop 4 Microbial Cell Factories based on low-energy biotechnological processes using CO2 or CO2/sugars as feedstock using three biological systems. Thus, C3-C6 alcohols will be produced by anaerobic microorganisms, 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) using aerobic microorganism and formic acid using recombinant resting cells (enzymes) and lactic acid using a multi-enzymatic system (enzymes). The technologic, socio-economic and environmental feasibility of the technologies will be assessed to ensure their future implementation, and transfer to other feedstocks, such as syngas or biomass sugars/CO2 mixes. In Nederland, there is an interest for developing biobased high value chemicals and bioplastics to support the circular economy and the zero-waste economy. Major products of BIOCON-CO2 are important chemical intermediates (including Guerbert alcohols, formic acid), precursors of plastics (3-HP, lactic acid) and feed ingredients with antimicrobial activity to reduce antibiotic use in feed. The production of chemicals (Guerbert alcohols with uses as surfactants, emulsifiers, etc) from mixes of sugars from biomass and CO2 using fermentation and enzymatic reactions and the production of formic acid using enzymes will be developed at WFBR.
