Description

The current regulations for processing of animal byproducts are generally as follows:

  • Category 1. Must be disposed of as waste, incinerated, or used in technical applications other than feed or fertilizer.
  • Category 2. May be disposed of as waste, but some products may be processed into fertilizer or in technical applications outside the food/feed system. Under conditions, valorization as feed for pets or animals reared for fur.
  • Category 3. Aside from the applications possible for Cat 1 and 2, these may under conditions be used for feed production and technical products.

In the Netherlands, Cat 1 material is rendered into bone meal and fats, and disposed of through incineration or combustion. Cat 2 material is often processed together with Cat 1 material. Cat 3 material (including dairy and egg products)  are party valorized as feed. For practical reasons (e.g. logistics, processing costs), a considerably amount of Cat 3 material is processed together with Cat 1 and Cat 2 material. Foregoing possibly higher-value applications, economic and nutritional value is lost. This suboptimal valorization is part due to the fact that individual producers only have information about their own flows, and there is no global overview of these flows. Improving insight in the volumes of these flows, their current destinations, and flows that are valorized suboptimally is an important step towards identifying opportunities for the Netherlands to valorize byproducts in higher-value applicatinos.

This project generates insight into the volumes, origins, destinations, and value of these byproducts, estimates what part of these is valorized suboptimally and why, and hereby provides a basis for exploring the possibilities of more efficient valorization.
