Manure and ammonia models are used for different purposes and for different clients in the Netherlands. For example, the National Water Quality Model (LWKM, the successor to the STONE model) uses the nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) load of surface water for the Evaluation of the Fertilizers Act and the Water Framework Directive. The ammonia emission model NEMA is used for the estimation of the ammonia emission at national level and the Aerius model is used for the emission and deposition of ammonia at regional and local level. The LWKM model uses spatially explicit data on manure and fertilizer application and the Aerius model of spatially explicit ammonia emission data as a result of manure and fertilizer application. The spatially explicit distribution of manure application and ammonia emission has so far been provided by the MAMBO model.
At the beginning of 2017 it was decided to further develop the INITIATOR model as a fully-fledged replacement for MAMBO, which was carried out within the framework of this project.
For this purpose, INITIATOR has been modified so that the required input for the LWKM and Aerius models can be delivered in the desired resolution. This proposal provides a description of the work that needs to be done to achieve this. This project was carried out in four phases: (i) establishing a data model and procedure for the connection with LWKM and Aerius, (ii) updating and updating databases and the INITIATOR interface, (iii) application of the manure distribution module and comparison with MAMBO and (iv) transfer results and quality assurance.
