Open data is data that anyone can access, use and share, according to its simplest definition. A longer version definition of open data refers to it being "accessible, machine-readable and with an open licence" Open Data (OD), that can be freely used, shared, and built-on by anyone, anywhere, for any purpose, is widely recognised as a priority goal by the development community and a driver for economic growth.The recent GODAN Summit 2016 in New York highlighted the potential of open data to contribute to ending hunger, one of the sustainable development goals, and ended with a commitment of many governments and other stakeholders to further develop innovations in open data towards ending hunger.
With many data sources available on the supply side, there is scope to deploy them for creating impacts in agriculture and nutrition, specifically with respect food security. However, steps of enrichment of data to information and knowledge need to be taken, just as understanding the (user) needs of the beneficiaries that could work with the data. In other words, demand of data needs to be confronted with supply of data in targeted cases
