The Amazon on fire! What is her future?
Recent years have seen an unprecedented amount and intensity of fires in the Amazon. In this study we investigate the resilience of these forests to fire. We assess which tree characteristics are important for the resilience, and how this resilience varies along gradients of climate and soil type within the Amazon. Such knowledge is essential to design management and conservation strategies to effectively protect, use and restore these forests, and hence to assure the future of the Amazon ecosystem.

De Amazone in brand! Wat is haar toekomst?
De laatste jaren komen in de Amazone branden voor waar het ecosysteem van nature niet op is aangepast. In deze studie wordt de weerbaarheid van Amazonebossen tegen branden onderzocht. We bepalen welke boomeigenschappen een rol spelen bij die weerbaarheid, en hoe deze weerbaarheid varieert langs gradiënten in klimaat en bodemtypes in de Amazone. Dat soort kennis is essentieel om deze bossen beter te beschermen en de toekomst van dit ecosysteem te waarborgen.
