Short profile:

Dr.ir. Henny A.J. van Lanen (Assoc. Prof. emeritus Hydrology & Quantitative Water Management) He has been involved in several EU projects (see below). He is coordinator of the European FRIEND programme (EURO FRIEND-Water, Flow Regimes from International Experimental and Network Data; cross-cutting theme UNESCO-IHP) and coordinator of the European Drought Centre (EDC. He was Global Coordinator of the FRIEND Inter-Group Coordination Committee (FIGCC) (cross-cutting theme UNESCO-IHP), member of the Open Panel of CHy Experts (OPACHE) of Commission of Hydrology (CHy) from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), member of the Discussion Group on Droughts of the UN-International Strategy on Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR), member/chair of the Project Review Group of Global Water Partnership (WM-GWP) on Integrated Drought Management in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE-IDMP).

Previous experience (list of up to 5 relevant projects):

Dr. Van Lanen has been: (i) a Principal Investigator of the EU FP4-ARIDE project (Assessment of drought impact in Europe ), (ii) Co-coordinator of the EU-FP5 ASTHyDA project (Analysis, Synthesis, of Knowledge Transfer and Tools on Droughts via an EU Network), (iii) , member of the Project Steering Group and Lead of the Work Block Hydrological Extremes of the EU-FP6 WATCH project (WATer and global Change), (iv) member of Coordination Team of the EU-FP7 project XEROCHORE (Gr. dry land), (v) Coordinator of the recently finished EU-FP7 project DROUGHT-R&SPI (Fostering European Drought Research and Science-Policy Interfacing), and (vi) member of the Executive Board and Lead of Work Package on Advanced forecasting models and tools to anticipate Weather & Climate event induced impacts, EU Horizon-2020 project ANYWHERE (EnhANcing emergencY management and response to extreme WeatHER and climate Events).

He (co-)authored over 50 papers in peer-reviewed international journals. He was (co)-editor of 8 scientific books on drought, water scarcity and regional flow regimes. He is editor of the textbook “Hydrological Drought”. He wrote two XEROCHORE (An Exercise to Assess Research Needs and Policy Choices in Areas of Drought) Science Policy Brief and was as project coordinator strongly involved in Science-Policy Interfacing at different scales (from river basin to pan-Europe).

Over 30 keynote presentations on Drought and Water Scarcity in all continents of the world (e.g. most European countries, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Niger, South Africa, Kenya, Australia, Iran, India, Malaysia, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Chile. 

Teaching/Supervisor:

Supervision of over 100 MSc. and PhD students in hydrology, hydrogeology and water management, who did their research in: Australia, Belgium, Burkina Faso, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Ethiopia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Spitsbergen, USA and the United Kingdom. In addition studies were done at large-scales (Europe, globe). Most of the thesis work dealt with groundwater, low river flow and drought and water scarcity studies, monitoring and modelling.
