Dietary food group intake and severity and progression of Parkinson's disease: a data-driven identification of novel nutritional targets

Dataset

Description

The current study is a secondary analysis of the Personalized Parkinson Project (PPP). The PPP study is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study which aims to identify biomarkers that can assist in predicting differences in prognosis and treatment response between patients and thereby improving existing treatments. The study population of the PPP study consisted out of 520 participants aged ≥ 18 years with the diagnosis PD and a disease duration of ≤5 years. Participants with co-morbidities so severe that it would hamper the interpretation of PD were excluded from the study.
In the current study, the population will consist of out the 251 participants who filled in the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) between visit 1 and visit 2. In case the energy intake is < 600 kcal/day or > 5000 kcal/day the participant will be excluded due to unreliability.
Participants were recruited via the Dutch National ParkinsonNet, healthcare providers, and the Dutch Parkinson Patient Association who promoted the study in combination with various social media announcements.
Further information regarding the details of the study design, study population, and in- and exclusion criteria of the study can be found in the research protocol of the ‘Personalized Parkinson Project’ (doi: 10.1186/s12883-019-1394-3, trial registration: https://onderzoekmetmensen.nl/en/node/49224/pdf).
