Description
Description for the Dataset: “Data and scripts supporting ‘North Sea Storm Surges Amplified by Oscillations Triggered by Preceding Storms’”This dataset supports the research presented in the paper “North Sea Storm Surges Amplified by Oscillations Triggered by Preceding Storms” by Joris G.W. Beemster et al. The study investigates how storm surges in the North Sea can be amplified by basin-scale oscillations generated by preceding storm events. By combining hydrodynamic model results, water level observations, and analysis scripts, the dataset provides the basis for reproducing the figures and key analyses presented in the paper.
Methodology:The research examines the interaction between successive storm events and the resulting water level response in the North Sea. Hydrodynamic model simulations were used to investigate how oscillations triggered by earlier storms can persist in the basin and influence the magnitude and timing of subsequent storm surges. The analysis compares modeled water levels, surge components, and oscillatory behavior across selected events to identify the mechanisms responsible for surge amplification.
Data and Scripts Included:
Figure Scripts:The repository contains the scripts used to generate the figures presented in the paper. These scripts document the processing steps, analysis methods, and visualization procedures applied to the model results and supporting data.
Model Results:Hydrodynamic model output used in the study is included in this dataset. These results support the analysis of storm surge development, residual water levels, and basin-scale oscillations in the North Sea.
Water Level Time Series:Processed water level time series are available. Raw data can be retrieved from the respective national or regional monitoring agencies responsible for the original measurements. Users interested in these observations should consult the data providers referenced in the paper.
Data Availability:The dataset contains the derived model results and analysis scripts required to reproduce the main figures and analyses. Previously published or agency-held water level observations should be obtained directly from their original sources.
Acknowledgments:This work was funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) within the Vici project “Deltas out of Shape: Regime Changes of Sediment Dynamics in Tide-Influenced Deltas” (Grant NWO-TTW 17062) for Joris Beemster, Bas van Maren, and Ton Hoitink.
