The joy of teaching: Career perspectives in higher education after finishing your PhD

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentationOther

Description

I am a lecturer and study advisor in the Laboratory of Nematology at WU. During the process of finishing my PhD, I made the decision to find a position in which I could have a main focus on education. I have been involved in teaching ever since the very start of my PhD and I always noticed I had a big smile on my face after leaving educational activities (e.g. practicals, coaching, tutorials). In this talk, I will try to share what helped me make my choices and hopefully inspire you to think about your own career wishes. Most PhD students have the tendency to start thinking about their future career options towards the end of their PhD. The objective of finishing your thesis can be an all-consuming activity and can leave relatively little energy for reflection. Nevertheless, by reflecting early on and on a regular basis, you can start to define what specific aspects give you energy, make you enthusiastic and what challenges you. Doing this, can help in the process of finding your own niche and help you to better define your own learning goals during your PhD. I will present some options of skills you could develop during your PhD if you would be interested in applying for a position in education. I will also give a rough overview of the different ways in which you can further develop yourself within higher education in general.
