Seaweed is seen as promising biomass in the future bioeconomy, with a wide range of foreseen applications. Part of the charm of seaweed is that the its production comes with local and global environmental benefits such carbon sequestration, nutrient recovery and habitat provisioning. If cultivated seaweeds are used as food or in the production of food, the image of a circular seaweed bioeconomy emerges.
