Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (WFBR) has been working on all aspects of the PHA value chain for the past couple of decades. This expertise ranges from the development of new PHA types by innovative fermentation approaches towards the optimization of PHA processing and product development. In this presentation, we will demonstrate our recent findings on using PHA polymers in applications that at present have a high risk of contributing to plastic accumulation in nature such as catering products, packaging, textiles and agricultural cultivation products. An important parameter to yield a successful market implementation of PHAbased products is the ability to program the biodegradation characteristics to match the product requirements during use and end-of-life. This presentation will show the progress made on this topic by the WFBR team in the past years and give insights on the directions for the most interesting market opportunities for PHA polymers in the years to come.
