Foamed products based on renewable raw materials

Activity: Talk or presentationKeynote talkProfessional

Description

Foaming of (plastic) materials is a proven method to reduce product weight and simultaneously add functionalities like insulation and cushioning. For these reasons polymeric foams are increasingly used in a wide range of applications such as packaging, automotive and construction. At present fossil based plastics are used but there is a strong need for sustainable foam products that fit within the future circular economy.
Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (WFBR) has a track record of over 30 years in developing innovative and sustainable solutions. WFBR is collaborating with industry to develop biobased materials with a more positive impact on our environment, while ensuring equal or better performance than their fossil-based counterparts.
WFBR has developed a new extrusion foaming technology and also a methodology to model this process using rheological data, allowing the production of products with different shapes based on starch/cellulose formulations. This available methodology can be used for other biobased materials, such as biobased polyesters and biobased blends.
Owing to our experience in biobased materials and foaming technologies, we can develop biobased foams for durable applications in sectors such as the automotive industry and building and construction; and also for other sectors such as slow moving consumer goods, allowing the shift towards sustainable materials while retaining foam functionality such as cushioning and insulation performance without affecting weight reduction.
