Description

Climate-responsive planning and design is a growing field of knowledge on how to endow urban areas with a better capacity to cope with extreme weather phenomena. Much of the research carried out on this topic focuses on developed economies, planned urban areas and temperate climates. What happens when we move to developing economies, high-density unplanned urban areas, and harsher climates? Like in no other type of urban settlement, unplanned urban areas are vulnerable to climate-related shocks and stresses, and so are their inhabitants, especially in arid climates. In this one-day, hands-on workshop you will be challenged to apply climate-responsive spatial interventions in the unplanned urban area of Shobra, Cairo. You will learn about basic knowledge on the processes governing urban climates, on analysis techniques for urban climate processes, and on climate-responsive spatial design solutions. Afterwards, through typical design methods (for example, sketching or 3D modelling) you will create spatial concepts and site-designs aimed at reducing heat stress on local streetscapes.
